Mongolia's iron ore and coal railway transportation volume for 2023 increased on-year, which is line with the on-year increase in exports. Kallanish notes however that the coal export increase is much bigger than growth of railway transportation volume.
Mongolia transported 5.44 million tonnes of iron ore and 12.69mt of coal via railway in 2023, up 13.03% and 38.67% on-year respectively, according to Mongolia's national statistics office. Iron ore's transportation volume rebounded 76.6% month-on-month to 565,900t in December 2023. For coal, it went up for five straight months to 1.2mt in December, up 3% m-o-m.
Mongolia exported 5.71mt of iron ore and 69.6mt of coal in 2023, up 20.72% and 118.75% respectively. China imported 47.4mt of coking coal over January-November from Mongolia, up 119.4% on-year, which accounts for most of the above increase. Trucks play the main role in coal transportation between China and Mongolia. The coal passing through Ganqimaodu port reached 36.5mt in 2023.
