Famous Steel Structures

Some of the famous steel structures in the world today are constructed using steel. The attraction of steel lies in its flexibility, high strength, and durability. Skyscrapers and building architecture are assembled by welding the beam, channel, angle, plate to shape the required design.

Here are few of the famous structures around the world.

  1. Brooklyn Bridge, USA

This bridge spans the East River from Brooklyn to Manhattan in New York City. The bridge uses hybrid cable-stayed/suspension with a length of 486-metre. It is supported by four cables which load automobile and pedestrian traffic. The construction of the bridge represents technological achievement for New York City.1

  1. Taipei 101, Taiwan

Taipei 101 is an office building with 101 stories. The tower resembles a bamboo stem or pagoda.

It is constructed from pliant steel which is strong and yet has a low yield to tensile stress ratio to accommodate plastic strain during natural disaster. Five types of steel plates are used with yield strength of 412–510 MPa and a tensile strength ranging from 570–720 MPa. Approximately 80% of the steel usage in the building has a tensile strength of 420MPa.2

3. The Empire State Building, USA

This is an iconic office building and the tallest building in New York City. It has 102 stories with 210 steel beams and columns for the foundation. It is estimated that 60,000 tonnes of steel were used in the construction.3 The steel section were manufactured in the steel mill within 2mm tolerance in order to be bolted together or connected with rivets.4

4. Burj Khalifa, Dubai

Burj Khalifa is an icon of the modern world with a height of 828 meter, currently the tallest building in the world. It provides recreational, leisure activities and restaurants. About 39,000 tonnes of steel rebars were used in its construction. The steel frame adds support for the structure and provides a unique shape.5

5. Beijing National Stadium, China

The National Stadium of Beijing is located at Olympic Green which hosted the Olympic Games in 2008. It has a replica of a bird’s nest with 91,000-seats which embody Chinese art and culture. The base of the stadium consists of steel material. A total of 41,875 tonnes of steel were used in the construction. Its design has caused steel sections to be curved, lifted, and placed and joined with each other.6

6. Petronas Twin Towers, Malaysia

The national petroleum company of Malaysia, Petronas, has its headquarters housed in the Petronas Twin Towers. Standing at 452 meters, it has a pinnacle shape with 88 stories built with a slender steel spire. Its exterior is constructed by stainless steel and glass and steel-reinforced concrete columns. The skybridge connects the two towers between 41st and 42nd floor. 7 Today, the Petronas Towers are still the highest twin towers in the world.

Structures around the world have resorted to using steel since the Industrial Revolution. This is because it has unique flexibility, strength, is 100% recyclable, energy efficient and earthquake resistant.
