PT Vale targets slightly increased 2024 nickel production

Vale’s Indonesian nickel subsidiary, PT Vale Indonesia Tbk, aims to increase nickel in matte production modestly in 2024 due to maintenance plans, Kallanish notes.

This firm is targeting 800 tonnes more nickel in matte production, from 70,000t in 2023 to 70,800t in 2024. According to Bernardus Irmanto, the general manager of Vale Indonesia, utilisation could decrease in 2024 due to more equipment maintenance days, which could elevate nickel productivity in following years. Also, the nickel content of mines to be exploited plays a role.

Vale Indonesia's nickel production reached 51,644t from January to September, up 18% year-on-year, which enables it to be optimistic about the 70,000t goal in 2023 being accomplished.

To cope with expected nickel supply pressure in 2024, this company is trying to control its production costs. Irmanto says: “We have kept production cost lower than $10,000/tonne in the past three months.”
