Masdar, PLN ink Indonesia green hydrogen agreement

UAE’s Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and Indonesia’s state-owned utility company PLN plan to develop a floating solar power plant and explore green hydrogen opportunities.

The new agreement, signed at COP28 in Dubai on Sunday, builds on a long-standing partnership between the firms, having already launched Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar power plant. Located on the Cirata reservoir in West Java, Indonesia, the recently inaugurated 145-megawatt project can provide renewable power to 50,000 homes.

The companies will now conduct a joint study to triple Cirata’s capacity to up to 500 MW, Kallanish learns from Masdar. They will also explore opportunities for developing green hydrogen, recognising its potential to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as steelmaking, construction, transportation, and aviation. With abundant solar resources, both the UAE and Indonesia are in a “prime position” to become green hydrogen production hubs, Masdar says.

“The Cirata project shows how innovation can be used to meet multiple needs at once,” comments Masdar ceo Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi. “As the world looks for urgent solutions to the climate crisis at COP28, we need more smart projects like Cirata.”

“With its robust economy and abundant renewable resources, Southeast Asia is a key investment destination for Masdar,” the top executive adds. “Through our deepening cooperation with PLN, we will continue pioneering innovation in solar, green hydrogen and other key areas in support of the region’s energy transition.”

In September, Masdar and PLN signed a deal to develop Phase 2 of the Cirata plant, which will triple its capacity.

Last month, Masdar inked an agreement with Infinity Power Holding and Hassan Allam Utilities to develop a 2-gigawatt green hydrogen project in Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE). It also partnered with ZeroAvia early this year to explore hydrogen aviation fuel opportunities.
