China's imports of stainless steel reached 284,200 tonnes in October, higher by 22.8% from September and refreshing a new high for this year, yet the tonnage was still lower by 8.6% from October 2022, according to the data released by the country's General Administration of Customs (GACC).
The on-month rise was mainly reflected in more stainless imports from Indonesia in October, which jumped 23.9% from the prior month to 250,900 tonnes.
Over January-October, China imported 1.67 million tonnes of stainless steel in total, down by 39.4% on year, the GACC data showed.
Impacted by weak overseas demand, China's stainless steel exports eased further by 1.9% on month to reach 336,500 tonnes in October, though the volume was still higher by 13.8% on year. During the past ten months, the country exported a total of 3.44 million tonnes of stainless steel, losing 8.4% on a yearly basis, according to the GACC's statistics.
