Taiwan’s major electric furnace plant withdraws decision to pre-collect carbon fees

Two weeks ago, a major electric furnace plant in Southern Taiwan said it would collect additional carbon fees of NT$150/ton from January next year for old and new rebar orders that couldn’t be shipped out by the end of this year. Several Southern mills followed the move, but the construction companies were angry about the fee collection and asked for an explanation of the charging standards.

Therefore, some mills decided not to collect the carbon fees as they thought the charge of NT$150/ton had no legal basis and said the future imposition would follow the government’s regulation.

The major electric furnace plant in Southern Taiwan also finally withdrew its decision as big traders strongly resisted the pre-collection for carbon fees and decided not to start the imposition until the government introduced relevant measures.
