Ural Steel eyes new EAF, pipe production

Zagorsk Pipe Plant (ZTZ)’s Ural Steel works is implementing projects aimed at increasing production volumes and expanding the range of products.

One of the projects is the addition of a new electric arc furnace. As a result, the enterprise will be able to reach 2.5 million tonnes/year of steel capacity, Kallanish notes.

According to the company, in the coming years, a third filling machine and a vacuum degasser will commence operation. “Already this year, a mixing department with a new crane will open, which will allow for an additional 50,000 tonnes of pig iron not to be sold in commercial form, but to be used instead of scrap,” it explains.

Another project is the launch of pipe production. An inspection of the TPA-80 pipe rolling unit showed the deadlines are being met and the company will receive the first batch of pipe this year, it says.

The design capacity of the TPA-80 unit is 250,000 t/y. As a result, the plant will diversify from producing sheet into pipe output, including pipe made from special-purpose steel.

Ural Steel recently developed and commissioned technology for producing rolled sheet from the new high-strength weldable WeldUS 690 steel (see Kallanish passim). The new grade combines the highest impact strength at temperatures down to minus 70° Celsius.

The pilot batch was shipped to the consumer, received positive feedback, and the first commercial orders are currently being carried out.

The plant also implemented a programme of initiatives to improve operational efficiency at its rolling shop No.1 (see Kallanish passim). When the programme started at the beginning of the year, the shop shipped 80,000 tonnes/month of rolled products to consumers, while the current capacity is 84,000t.
