Indian coking coal production increased 9.63% on-year to 4.69 million tonnes in September, compared to 4.28mt produced a year earlier, India’s coal ministry informs. This also includes 0.51mt of captive production, up 17.36% versus 0.43mt last year.
Output, however, dropped on-month, by 1.68% versus 4.77mt produced in August, Kallanish notes.
Bharat Coking Coal (BCCL) was the largest coking coal producer in September, with output clocking at 2.95mt during the period, reporting a 13.54% on-year growth against 2.6mt produced last year. Other producers included CCL (1.21mt) and SECL (0.02mt).
Coking coal production also grew 15.12% to 29.54mt in April-September versus 25.66mt produced last year. BCCL was by far the largest producer in the period, with production totalling 18.43mt. Other major producers included CCL (7.81mt), SECL (0.11mt), and WCL (0.03mt).
India’s total coal production, including thermal coal, increased 15.91% on-year to 67.27mt in September, and dispatches totalled 70.31mt, up by 15.08%.
In April-September, production and sales increased 12.07% and 10.94%, respectively, to 428.31mt and 462.22mt.

This underscores the efficiency of the coal supply chain, ensuring the seamless distribution of coal nationwide.”
“The Ministry of Coal remains committed to maintaining consistent coal production and dispatch, ensuring an uninterrupted supply for a reliable and resilient energy sector contributing to the nation’s continued growth and prosperity,” the ministry adds.
India’s total coal dispatches – including Coalfield India and other miners – to steel plants increased 30.34% on-year to 0.8mt in September, whereas dispatches to sponge iron units surged 37.21% to 0.77mt. Coalfield India’s dispatches to steel plants and sponge iron plants clocked at 0.29mt and 0.74mt, respectively.
