US President Joe Biden, European Council President Charles Michel, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will have a high-level meeting held in Washington on October 20.
The US and the EU are trying to resolve transatlantic differences, especially over trade policy. Both parties hoped a deal on critical minerals would give the EU certain exemptions from the US Inflation Reduction Act, which was expected to provide billions of dollars in green technology subsidies to North American companies.
In addition, they also hoped to resolve long-standing steel and aluminum disputes since the former president Trump’s tariffs imposition on European imports in 2018. If they can’t reach an agreement over this issue by October 31 this year, billions of dollars in tariffs will be reimposed on each other’s products.
