US premium EV start-up Lucid Motors started assembling its Lucid Air BEVs in Saudi Arabia, officially opening on Wednesday the country’s first-ever car manufacturing facility, Kallanish learns.
The Advanced Manufacturing Plant (AMP-2), built at King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) in Jeddah, will assemble vehicle kits pre-manufactured at the company’s first plant in Arizona. The Saudi facility will initially assemble 5,000 cars per year. It’s planned to manufacture 155,000 BEVs/year around 2028.
The project, heavily backed by the Saudi Industrial Development Fund, will play a “pivotal role” in accelerating Saudi’s 30% EV target in new car sales by 2030, Lucid says.
“We are delighted to make history today in Saudi Arabia by opening the country’s first car manufacturing facility,” says Peter Rawlinson, who is both the ceo and chief technology officer at Lucid Group. “As Saudi charges towards its Vision 2030, our facility will pave the way for the country’s electric automotive industry and the expansion of the supply chain.”
Jeddah’s position on the country’s Red Sea coast already offers robust supply chain access by land and sea and enables Lucid to export its finished luxury electric vehicles to other regions in the future.
