Japan’s automobile production surged in June compared with the prior month due to improved semiconductor shortages and solid demand, according to data given by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).
The country recorded total production of 763,470 vehicles in June, which surged 22.4% month-on-month and 14.2% year-on-year, Kallanish notes. Passenger cars still contributed the majority of the increased volume, and buses posted the fastest growth among all. All types of trucks however, saw declines on a y-o-y basis.
For the first half of the year, Japan’s auto production amounted to 4.32 million units, 19% higher than a year earlier. Like the monthly output, passenger cars and buses performed much better, but trucks’ output just maintained last year's levels.
Domestic sales performed well. Only the sales of mini trucks fell slightly in June, but its impact on the whole was extremely limited. Sales came to 392,719 units in June, up 20.2% m-o-m and 19.8% y-o-y, and 2.45m units in H1 with a yearly gain of 17.5%.
Exports also showed growth in general, but half of the varieties fell back y-o-y, including all types of trucks and mini passenger cars. Japan exported 408,641 cars in June and 2.02m cars in H1, growing 32.5% and 16.8% from the year-ago level, respectively.
