Weak exports see Turkish producers prefer Kardemir billet

Kardemir published a new price list and opened domestic sales for billet on Wednesday, Kallanish notes.

150mm square billet was increased by $15/tonne to $525-535/t ex-works, excluding 18% VAT, from the previous list issued on 16 August.

Kardemir sold around 60,000 tonnes of billet in a few hours and then closed sales. Turkish re-rollers and some producers, who are struggling to sell in export markets, preferred Kardemir's billet to avoid billet import duties. The blast furnace-based steelmaker’s competitive billet values and deferred payment option offering also enticed buyers.

Producers in southern and western Turkey offered billet at $540-550/t and $535-540/t ex-works respectively on Wednesday, while imported billet was available at $500-532/t cfr Turkey, depending on the seller and destination port.

The lira stood at TRY 26.80/$1 on Wednesday morning.
