Hyundai Motor Group plans green hydrogen production from biogas

South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group announced Friday it will start a waste-to-green hydrogen demonstration project near Seoul, Kallanish reports.

The company plans to convert biogas generated during a food waste treatment process into green hydrogen over the next two years. The demonstration system is planned to produce 216 kilograms of green hydrogen per day, which is enough to power over 34 NEXOs – Hyundai’s fuel cell electric vehicles.

"High-purity hydrogen production is possible through refinement and reforming processes,” Hyundai says in a statement.

The project will be implemented by Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Corporation, Hyundai E&C and the Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corporation (SL Corp.). The carmakers will establish an integrated system for the catalytic reaction process. Hyundai E&C will be in charge of developing gas separation technology in the hydrogen production process. SL Corp. will study biogas pre-treatment technology and provide research facilities, as well as biogas feedstock.

In addition to car manufacturing, the Hyundai Motor Group is also involved in steel, construction, logistics, finance, IT and service. The group notes its demo plant will open opportunities for large-scale hydrogen production using biogas, contributing to the establishment of a green hydrogen ecosystem and carbon neutrality.

The companies are yet to provide a development timeline for the project.
