Shougang Hierro Peru (SHP) miners began a strike on 22 August. Initially, the action is set to last until 29 August, Kallanish learns from a statement issued by Peru's sole iron ore producer.
Company management and representatives of the miners’ union Sindicato de Obreros Mineros de SHP held a meeting to resolve ongoing labour issues over the new collective agreement. However, talks have not been successful, SHP says.
SHP declined to comment about the possible losses and impact of the strike on its iron production and exports.
The national strike is being supported by 800 workers at SHP and the Port of San Juan de Marcona.
This is the second protest so far this year. The 15-day strike in April resulted in an on-month decline of 146,562 tonnes in SHP's production.
