China's shipbuilders received new vessel orders totaling 44.8 million deadweight tons (DWT) over January-July, or soaring by 74% on year, which was even more pronounced than the 67.7% on-year growth for H1, Mysteel Global noted from the latest release by the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI) on Tuesday.
Within the total, 7.1 million DWT of new orders were secured in July, lower by 36.8% compared to June, the data showed.
The substantial gains in Chinese shipyards' new orders over January-July saw their backlog increase by 23.4% on year to 127.9 million DWT by the end of July, the CANSI data showed.
In the past seven months, China's builders completed building vessels totaling 24.1 million DWT, up 15.6% on year, among which 3 million DWT were for July, down 36.5% on month, according to CANSI.
Over January-July, China's shipbuilding industry maintained its top position in the global shipbuilding sector, with the new orders, backlog and completed vessels accounting for the world's 67.7%, 52.9% and 47.8% respectively, all in terms of DWT, CANSI noted.
The CANSI data showed that the total value of Chinese ships exported during the first seven months added up to $13.7 billion, rising by 16.2% on year. Meanwhile, Chinese ships exported accounted for 84.2%, 92.6% and 92.9% of the country's completed vessels, new orders, and order backlog.
In particular, the country's exports of bulk carriers, oil tankers and container ships maintained their leading roles, according to the association.
In terms of vessel type, bulk carriers were still the largest segment in both completed vessels and new orders over January-July, contributing to 52.3% and 42% of the respective totals, CANSI pointed out.
The shipbuilders based in East China's Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Northeast China's Liaoning, and South China's Guangdong together took 90.7% of the country's total completed vessels in the past seven months, with Jiangsu's shipyards leading the way, according to the release.
