NMDC Steel commences blast furnace operations

NMDC Steel has commenced operations at the “Maa Danteshwari” blast furnace at its Nagarnar-based steel plant, the company’s chairman and managing director (additional charge), Amitava Mukherjee, has informed media.

Mukherjee, along with members of the senior management of NMDC and NMDC Steel (NSL), participated in the commissioning, Kallanish notes.

"We have fired up the Maa Danteshwari blast furnace today; this is the final step, followed by one last step of transferring the hot metal to the steel melting ship for rolling purposes in the next five to six days," Mukherjee said.

Speaking about the commissioning of the complete set-up, the chairman said: "To commission the complete 2-3 million tonnes/year capacity, we might take three to four months. This is our first priority."

According to Mukherjee, the 4,506-cubic-meter blast furnace is designed to produce 9,500 tonnes/day of hot metal. The steel plant will produce hot rolled coil, sheet, plate, and hot metal that will operate on a zero-discharge concept.

The operations commenced after the initial loading of 1,700t of coke, 985t of sinter, 270t of iron ore and 245t of fluxes.
