South Korea & Japan's response to EU CBAM

There has been a series of doubts and opposition from outside the EU to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) planned by the EU for steel, aluminum, cement, fertilizer, and electricity.

The Korea International Trade Association (KITA) requested that offshore manufacturing companies be allowed to submit data directly to the CBAM registry to protect confidentiality, and asked for the allowance of adoption of the Korea Emissions Trading Scheme (K-ETS) standard to calculate embodied carbon emissions and the elimination of transition period penalties.

The Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF) pointed out that only importers are required to submit carbon emission-related data. At the same time, EU steel manufacturers do not need it, violating the WTO's non-discrimination principle. Offshore companies submit data every three months, which is difficult to implement.
