NMDC Steel begins trial HRC production

NMDC Steel (NSL) has commenced trial production of hot rolled coil at its rolling mill, the company informs in a note seen by Kallanish.

"It is indeed a moment of pride for NMDC Steel as they commence the trial of their hot strip [mill] today [30 June]," says NMDC chairman and managing director Amitava Mukherjee.

"This achievement has paved the way for concluding the commissioning and integration of all the packages and roll-out steel in a month or so. This ambitious project, the commissioning of a 3 million tonnes/year steel plant, will be a landmark in the history of NMDC and NSL," Mukherjee adds.

According to the company, NSL, MECON, and Danieli completed the integrated trial runs by charging 70mm semi-rolled plate sourced from Rourkela Steel Plant. This was followed by ghost rolling and other synchronisation activities on 29 June, which culminated in taking slab into the tunnel furnace, resulting in the successful rolling of hot slab.

Post-stabilisation, NSL’s hot strip mill, supplied by Danieli, is expected to produce 2.9m t/y of coil, sheet and plate of different grades.

The HR plate manufactured at the plant will be widely used for LPG cylinders, bridges, automobile grades, pipes, storage tanks, boilers, and rail wagons.
