Hoa Phat upgrades strip plant, plans furnace restart

Vietnamese steelmaker Hoa Phat Group has commissioned the second-phase expansion project on the Danieli Quality Strip Production (QSP) plant in Dung Quat, in operation since 2020.

Production capacity was expanded from the previous 3.5 million tonnes/year to 3.9m t/y of low- and medium-carbon, LC HSLA- and MC HSLA-family steel grades, Kallanish learns. The plant is also able to produce weathering steel.

The upgrade for the current QSP plant consisted mainly of the installation of an additional fifth finishing stand and a third down-coiler in the hot-rolling mill area, along with two more segments added to each of the two thin-slab caster lines. The caster, with a speed of 6 metres/minute produced slab with thickness of 76mm and 87mm just a few days from the restart. The 1.2mm minimum thickness was also achieved, Danieli says.

Hoa Phat suspended plant operation for 27 days to carry out the upgrade.

Meanwhile, the steelmaker is aiming to restart its fourth blast furnace which has been mothballed since late 2022 at the Dung Quat plant. “We will try to restart the furnace by early July and have hot metal from the furnace in the second half of July,” a company source says. The furnace is one of four at the plant, each with 1m t/y of capacity. The whole plant has a crude steel capacity of 5.6m t/y.
