Steelmaker Ternium will build its new electric arc furnace (EAF) slab mill at its rerolling mill in Pesquería in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo León.
The 2.6mn metric tonne (t)/yr facility will be built adjacent to the company's existing 4.4mn t/yr hot rolling mill in Pesquería. Construction is expected to begin in December and the mill is expected to startup in the first half of 2026, the company announced today.
Ternium first announced the project in February, saying it was considering several sites in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) region before eventually settling on the existing facility. A regional EAF had been hinted at as early as April 2022.
Aside from the EAF and hot rolling mill, the Pesquería complex will also house a 550,000t/yr pickling line and finishing line expected in mid-2024, a 1.6mn t/yr cold rolling mill and 600,000t/yr hot-dip galvanizing line built by the end of 2025 and a 2.1mn t/yr direct reduced iron (DRI) plant and port facility for raw material intake by the first half of 2026.
In its original announcement, Ternium said it wanted to create more steel supply in Mexico to meet USMCA requirements that will be implemented in 2027.
