China's excavator sales drop 18.5% YoY in May

Chinese sales of excavators to both domestic and overseas customers during May fell by 18.5% on year to 16,809 units, according to the latest data released by China Construction Machinery Association (CCMA) on June 8.

The CCMA survey among the country's 25 major excavator producers showed that out of the total, the domestic sales reached 6,592 units, slumping by 45.9% on year.

China's excavator industry, a typically cyclical industry, is still in a downward cycle. Besides, the shift to Stage IV exhaust emission standards for non-road machinery since last December had brought forward the demand for excavators, as Stage III excavators were cheaper compared with those complying with Stage IV emission standards, a Shanghai-based analyst said.

Demand from the two major consumption sectors – infrastructure and property redevelopment – has been waning, also leading to the poor sales of excavators, he added.

Meanwhile, during last month, China's excavator sales to overseas buyers soared by 21% on year to 10,217 units, the CCMA data showed.

In the first five months of 2023, total excavator sales inside and outside China amounted to 93,052 units, falling by 23.9% on year. Among the total, domestic sales accounted for 48.3% or 44,933 units, dropping by 43.9% on year. On the other hand, China's exports during the five months grew by 13.9% on year to 48,119 units, CCMA's data showed.

As for loaders, another key item of construction machinery, domestic and overseas sales of these among the 19 manufactures slipped by 10.7% on year to 48,042 units over January-May. Among the total, domestic sales of loaders fell by 29.8% on year to 25,592 units, while sales to overseas buyers gained by 29.3% on year to 22,450 units in the first five months.
