South Korean steel producer Posco launched the country's first mass balanced low-carbon steel brand "Greenate certified steel" last Thursday 1 June.
This certification refers to reducing the carbon emissions realized in the production process by introducing low-carbon production technology and using low-carbon materials, Kallanish learns from Posco. This is recognized at its Pohang and Gwangyang plant by the authoritative certification firm Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
Posco's certified carbon emission reduction is 590,000 tonnes, which means it can sell about 200,000-300,000t of "Greenate certified steel". It can be seen that the ratio of carbon emission reduction to steel production is about 2:1.
The mill started increasing the use of pellets and steel scrap in blast furnaces and converters, respectively, from January this year, it said. In the short term, it expects to sell "renewable energy steel" by purchasing renewable energy credits, or "Greenate certified steel" using carbon credit allocations.
Posco plans to produce steel through new electric arc furnaces starting in 2026, and to improve the existing low-carbon operation technology based on blast furnaces to reduce carbon emissions. In addition, after the hydrogen reduction steelmaking equipment is completed in 2026, it plans to conduct the commercialization of this technology by 2030, and gradually convert its production equipment to hydrogen reduction steelmaking.
The product has entered the commercial stage. In November last year, Posco and LG Electronics signed a supply agreement, that LG ordered 200t of the product to use for the production of parts, and LG is considering expanding the application of ths steel to the field of home appliances.
