Indian iron ore – including pellet – exports increased 25% on-year to 3.83 million tonnes in April against 3.05mt exported a year ago. Standalone pellet exports plunged 55% to 0.63mt during the period, according to customs data monitored by Kallanish.
China was by far the largest market for Indian iron ore and pellet in April, importing 3.67mt during the period. Other major markets include Malaysia (0.09mt), South Korea (0.05mt), and Nepal (0.01). The major importers of Indian pellet were China (0.49mt), Malaysia (0.09mt), and South Korea (0.05mt).
Meanwhile, Vedanta was the largest iron ore exporter from India, with exports totalling 0.55mt in April. Other major suppliers during the period were Rungta Sons (0.47mt), Euro Pratik Ispat (0.34mt), Praful Enterprises (0.23mt), KAI International (0.18mt), Bagadiya Brothers (0.14mt), and SA Imports and Exports (0.11mt).
Major pellet exporters in India were KIOCL (0.16mt), Rungta Mines (0.15mt), JSW Techno Projects Management (0.11mt), and AMNS India (0.11mt).
Indian pellet production increased 4.5% in April to 6.87mt, against 6.57mt produced last year. JSW, AMNS India, and JSPL were the major producers in April, with 10.88mt, 10.59mt and 0.65mt, respectively.
Meanwhile, sponge iron output also grew 8% to 3.89mt in April, with AMNS (0.43mt), JSW (0.27mt) and JSPL (0.24mt) the major producers (see Kallanish passim). Indian merchant pig iron production, however, fell 7.1% to 0.51mt.
