Chinese shipbuilders received new ship orders totaling 19.85 million deadweight tons (DWT) over January-April, or having climbed by 29% on year, among which 90.4% were for exports, according to the latest data released by the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI) via its official WeChat account on Wednesday morning.
In April, the country's shipyards won new orders equivalent to 4.67 million DWT, 21.2% lower compared to March, the CANSI data found.
As for order backlog, the volume at Chinese shipyards posted a 12.3% on-year gain to reach 115.06 million DWT by end-April. Within the total orders nursed by shipbuilders, 91.5% were for exports, according to the association.
During this year's first four months, Chinese shipbuilders' completed vessels also rose by 9.3% on year to total 12.8 million DWT, with 84.3% for exports. The tonnage completed in April declined though, down 26.5% on month to 3.63 million DWT.
The latest CANSI release also showed that China's top 10 shipbuilding enterprises contributed 70% of total completed ships nationwide over January-April, or 2.9 percentage points lower than the first three months, Mysteel Global noted from the new data.
The shipbuilders based in East China's Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang and Shandong and Northeast China's Liaoning accounted for 92.7% of the total completed vessels in the past four months, with Jiangsu's shipyards maintaining the dominant role, according to the release.
The total value of Chinese ships exported globally amounted to $70.1 billion over January-April, up 20.5% on year. Among the total, exports of bulk carriers, oil tankers and container ships remained major contributors, CANSI noted.
By vessel type, bulk carrier continued to be the most popular one during the first four months, making up 55.6% of completed vessels and 41.7% of new orders, respectively.
Meanwhile, container ships accounted for 24.8% of completed ships, while oil tankers took up 26.3% of new ship orders, according to the association.
Over January-April, Chinese shipbuilders saw their total new orders, order backlog and completed vessels represent 65.5%, 51.3% and 44.9% of the world's total, respectively, according to the CANSI data.
