Axpo to build another battery storage plant in Sweden

Axpo, Switzerland's largest producer of renewable energy, is to start construction in early 2024 of its second large battery storage plant located in Filipstad, Sweden in partnership with Sustainable Energy Solutions Sweden (SENS).

The facility located about 300 kilometres from Stockholm will have a 25 megawatt lithium-ion battery storage system capacity and is meant to provide services to the grid including balancing the electricity supply. In parallel the firm is developing a solar plant with a capacity of up to 20 MW, Kallanish notes. Both projects have been purchased from project developer SENS on 15 May.

Axpo has been focusing in recent years on the development of green hydrogen and renewable energy plants together with large-scale battery storage solutions. In the Landskrona region of Sweden in collaboration with renewable energy specialist RES the company will build another lithium-ion based battery storage project with a 20 MW capacity scheduled for commissioning next year. The facility will be connected to local energy supplier Landskrona Energi and will also help balance the region’s grid.

In 2021 Axpo acquired a 25% stake in hydrogen and synthetic methane specialist Swiss Green Gas International (SGGI). In Switzerland, it developed a 2 megawatt battery storage facility in Rapperswil-Jona in 2019 and in 2020 it announced the construction of a 6.25 MW storage system in Rathausen-Lucerne (see Kallanish passim).
