Krakatau Steel sees fire at hot-rolling mill

Indonesian state-owned producer Krakatau Steel has seen a fire at the Switch House Finishing Mill in one of the supporting areas of its HSM1 hot rolled coil line on 5 May, the company has confirmed to Kallanish.

There were no casualties and hot-rolled coil supplies are currently not affected because HRC products can still be supplied from the HSM2 facility, the company said. It is estimated by market sources that the hot rolling mill will be out of action for up to six months. But Krakatau Steel said it will complete equipment repairs and restart production as soon as possible.

Krakatau Steel's HSM1 has 2.4 million tonnes/year of capacity. Meanwhile, its HSM2 has 1.5m t/y rolling capacity.
