ArcelorMittal Dunkirk to restart blast furnace in June

ArcelorMittal’s Dunkirk steelworks is preparing to restart production at blast furnace no.4 after the fire that hit the unit in March. Following repairs, output should resume in mid-June with a ramp-up phase that will last a few weeks.

“The teams are making progress on the priority actions of analysis, repair and preparation for restarting,” a company spokesperson tells Kallanish.

The emptying process of BF 4 has been underway over the past ten days. This has enabled over 70% of the material to be evacuated. New electrical wiring is being installed while repairs continue of the building structure at south hall.

“Having adapted the operation of its facilities to a single blast furnace, ArcelorMittal France is implementing solutions to limit the impact on customers as much as possible: slab orders within the ArcelorMittal group, shifting and/or transferring orders, and making maximum use of stocks,” the source concludes.

BF no.4 is the largest at the Dunkirk plant. Besides BF no. 2, 3 and 4, ArcelorMittal Dunkirk is equipped with a coke oven, two sinter plants, three converters and ladle treatment stations, three continuous casters and a hot strip mill.
