Chery aims to increase presence in Russia’s EV, hydrogen car markets

Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer Chery plans to increase its presence in the Russian new energy auto market.

This was clear after Chery International president Zhang Guibing held a press conference with Russian media representatives in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China.

Chery is considering opening a plant in Russia, Kallanish notes.

“We never stopped thinking about the localisation project and this is closely related to the strategic development of Chery in Russia,” said Zhang Guibina. “Chery International continues to study the possibilities and offers from the production sites in order to select the best solution for this project. We are considering different ways of cooperation: our own CHERY plant, or a plant on a partnership basis.”

The company also plans to strengthen the presence of the Chery brand in the Russian market with a line of cars with a hybrid power engine.

Next month should begin sales of the large seven-seat hybrid TIGGO 8 PRO e+. Before the end of the year, the company intends to introduce a car of the TIGGO 7 PRO series with a hybrid power engine. Plans and prospects include the Arrizo 8 sedan with a hybrid power system.

“The next step in the Russian market - on the way to transforming the market environment - is to introduce EVs,” Zhang noted. “We see that the infrastructure in Russia is ready for this. The operation of electric cars in the winter period shows good results, the number of manufacturers of charging stations is increasing, as well as their number and coverage.”

Russian sales of electric vehicles increased in March to 702 units, up by 168% on-year. In January-March, Russians purchased 1,611 new EVs, compared to 827 units for the same period a year ago.

In a recent brand ranking, last month the Russian Evolute brand came out on top with 160 purchased EVs. In fact, every fifth electric car sold in March came from the Motorinvest Lipetsk plant. The company production plan covers 3,000 electric cars in 2023.
