Tata Steel begins hydrogen-gas-injection trials in blast furnace

Tata Steel on Monday informed initiating trial for injecting hydrogen gas at its blast furnace in the Jamshedpur plant, to reduce metallurgical coke usage and cut carbon emissions, Kallanish notes.

“Tata Steel has initiated a trial for record-high hydrogen gas injection in the blast furnace at its Jamshedpur Works - this is the world’s first instance when such a large quantity of hydrogen gas is being continuously injected in a blast furnace,” says the steel company.

“The trial, involving injection of hydrogen gas using 40% of the blast furnace’s injection systems, has the potential to reduce the coke rate by 10%, translating into around 7-10% reduction in CO2 emissions per ton of crude steel produced,” Tata Steel adds.

“This endeavour, aligned with Tata Steel’s vision of becoming Net Zero by 2045, is part of the larger pursuit of becoming an industry leader in sustainability,” the steel company concludes.
