Kazakhstan plans to significantly increase the domestic processing of non-ferrous metals in the country by 2029, according to the country’s Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure.
It is assumed that the indicators for aluminium will increase five times, for lead four times, and for copper by 13 times, Kallanish notes.
According to the ministry, a pool of 20 projects has been formed, which will allow it to multiply the in-depth processing of raw materials and the production of finished products.
“Until 2029, it is planned to put into operation over 800 investment projects for a total amount of over KZT 33 trillion ($73 billion) with the creation of about 147,000 jobs. The implementation of these projects will provide a volume of production in the amount of about KZT 9 trillion, import substitution is projected at the level of KZT 5 trillion and export – KZT 4.2 trillion.”
Projects in the fields of mechanical engineering, construction, light industry and metallurgy are mainly aimed at deepening localisation and producing goods with high added value, it added.
Earlier, Kazakhstan’s Kazakhmys corporation and UK-based, Kazakhstan-focused mining company KAZ Minerals discussed a possible new copper plant with China Nonferrous Metals Mining Group.
The design capacity of the plant will be 300,000 tonnes of cathode copper per year. The estimated amount of investment in the project and the timing of its implementation have not been specified.
KAZ Minerals increased copper production by 27% on-year to 380,000 t in 2022. The increase was due to Aktogay operating above design capacity, as well as improved performance at Sulphide 1 and the oxide plant, the enterprise claims.
Earlier, Kazakhstan launched a new hydrometallurgical in the territory of the Aktogay district of the Karaganda region. The enterprise will produce up to 5,000 t/y of cathode copper. The resource base for Irkaz Metal Corporation is the Borly deposit.
The Russian Copper Company (RCC) intends to develop two deposits in Koksay field in the Zhetysu region and Aidarly in the Abay region. Koksay is a copper deposit producing about 85,000 t/y of copper. The Aidarly copper deposit is being developed by Kazakhmys.
