Liberty Steel to phase out coal-based steelmaking, to adopt low carbon emission electric arc furnace

The UK steelmaker Liberty Steel has announced that it has signed a supply contract with Italian equipment maker Danieli, which Danieli will supply a 160-tonne low-carbon-emissions electric arc furnace (EAF). The new EAF will be built at Liberty's steel plant in Whyalla, Australia. It is expected to be completed in 2025.

The project is mainly to eliminate coal steelmaking and replace the existing coke oven and blast furnace. After completion, Whyalla's steelmaking capacity will increase to over 1.5 million tons per year, and carbon emissions will be reduced by 90%.
