Italy, UAE partner for decarbonisation, H2 projects

Italian energy company Eni is partnering with Abu Dhabi oil company ADNOC to fast-track the energy transition for the energy industry in the Middle East and Europe. The firms seek to invest in renewable energy and blue and green hydrogen projects, together with other decarbonisation technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS).

The cooperation agreement was also signed in Abu Dhabi by the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber in the presence of Italian President Giorgia Meloni and United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Kallanish notes.

The partnership starting this year comes in view of the upcoming COP28, “where the UAE, as hosting country, are expected to set out their vision for a clean energy transition agenda," Eni says in a note.

Amongst ADNOC’s several participations in European hydrogen projects, the company joined last year the H2Teesside blue hydrogen project in the UK led by BP. The firms agreed on the sale of a 25% stake in the project in northeast England for an undisclosed amount (see Kallanish 25 May 2022).
