South Korean steelmaker Posco Steel plans to install an electric arc furnace with capacity of 2.5 million tonnes/year at its Gwangyang plant.
The project is expected to start construction in January 2024 and be officially put into operation in 2026, Kallanish notes. Posco hopes to install continuously-feeding and preheating EAFs with a maximum volume of 300-tonnes, the steelmaker noted last year.
Posco's budget for this investment is KRW 600 billion ($462 million). "In the interim stage until the hydrogen reduction steelmaking technology is commercialized and replaces the existing blast furnace process, carbon reduction efforts will continue through the introduction of EAFs," it says.
Last year, Posco revealed that it was discussing feasibility plans for EAF installation with international steel equipment suppliers such as Danieli, Tenova, SMS, and Primetals. It is expected to introduce two 2.5m t/y at the Gwangyang plant and Pohang plant by 2027.
