Malaysia to extend EV tax breaks

Malaysia plans to officially announce the extension of tax breaks for electric vehicles in its federal budget to be released next month, according to Malaysia's official media Bernama

Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Malaysia's minister of natural resources, environment, and climate change, claimed more incentives will be provided in the revised Budget 2023 as part of the country's efforts in boosting green transport. The revised Budget 2023 is expected to be presented by the country's prime minister and finance minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives) on 24 February.

According to minister Nik Ahmad, the incentives the government provided in 2022 were proven effective as the number of registered EVs nationwide has been increased to more than 2,000.

At last week's memorandum of understanding signing ceremony on EV charging ecosystem between two Malaysian companies - technology hub developer Cyberview and comprehensive industrial service provider Roda Emas Industries (REISB), the minister said: "With the support of the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) 2021-2030, so far, over 900 public EV chargers have been installed in Malaysia."

In addition, he emphasised the importance of safety licensing. He encouraged local EV charging operators to secure the EV Charging System (EVCS) license certified by the Energy Commission before 31 March, Kallanish learns.

Malaysia aims to install 10,000 EV charging points by 2025, which is aligned with the goal set by the LCMB 2021-2030.
