Oman-based Jindal Shadeed Iron & Steel (JSIS) has broken ground on the construction of its captive iron ore pelletising plant in Sohar, Kallanish notes.
The 6 million tonnes/year capacity unit is scheduled for commissioning in early 2024. Operated by Shadeed affiliate Vulcan Pelletizing, it will supply pellet feedstock to Shadeed’s 1.8m t/y direct reduced iron plant. Metso Outotec won the €33 million ($33m) order for the technology supply earlier this year (see Kallanish passim).
Shadeed currently sources pellet from Vale’s Oman plant, also located in Sohar. The new pelletiser will be only the third iron ore pelletising plant in the Middle East after Vale and Bahrain Steel. However, last week, Vale announced plans to construct various iron ore “mega hubs” in the region, which will house new concentration and briquetting plants.
Shadeed also has a 2.4m t/y capacity electric arc furnace meltshop that feeds both square and round billet casters, and a 1.4m t/y rebar mill.
