India proposes imposition of retaliatory duties on UK imports

India has proposed the imposition of retaliatory duties under the WTO norms on imported products from the UK worth around US$250 million if no agreement is reached on the UK’s safeguard measures imposed on steel products.

According to the WTO, India has officially submitted its complaint to the WTO that the UK’s extended safeguard measures violate the global trade clause and the WTO’s Agreement on Safeguards.

The UK has disagreed with India’s claims that the UK’s extended safeguard duties violated WTO norms, but it has agreed to discuss appropriate compensation.
