The UK Department for International Trade said that it will announce the decision on the steel safeguard system and whether it will continue to be imposed from July 1, without specifying the date. The UK's current safeguard measures will expire on June 30.
UK Steel, the trade association for the UK steel industry said that most UK industries rely on imported steel as the domestic steel mills produce only about 10.2 million tons of crude steel, 70% of the annual demand.
UK Steel supported the government to continue to implement steel safeguard measures, while domestic steelmakers invest funds into decarbonization technology.
