Rio Tinto has taken full control of a Queensland alumina refinery which it owns with United Co. Rusal International PJSC, cutting Rusal's access to a key source of raw materials.
The alumina supply to Rusal has turned into disruption due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and it is uncertain if Rusal could maintain the production levels.
Australia announced in March an immediate ban on the export of alumina to Russia. Rusal could not access its share of production from Queensland Alumina, in which it owns 20% of the stake.
After the Australian government’s sanction measures, Rio Tinto has taken 100% of capacity and control of Queensland Alumina until further notice, according to the company’s statement.
