U.S. Raw Steel Production Surged 2%

The weekly production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) denotes surge in raw steel production in the week ending on January 4, 2020.

The current week production totalled 1.898 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 82.0%. This compares with the production of 1.861million net tons in the week ending January 4, 2019 at a capability utilization rate of 79.4%. Also, the production was up by 1.2% from the previous week, when production had totalled 1.876 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 81.1%.

The production by Southern region topped 698,000 net tons, closely followed by Great Lakes, whose production totalled 666,000 net tons. North East and Midwest production totalled 232,000 net tons and 209,000 net tons respectively. Meantime, Western region accounted for 93,000 net tons of crude steel production.

The cumulative year-to-date production through January 4, 2020 was up by 2.0% when matched with the production of 1.861 million net tons during the same period in 2019.
