Brazil’s CSP slab exports fall in 2019

Brazilian slab producer Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) saw its shipments decrease year-on-year in December. Overall exports also remained down during 2019, Kallanish learns from data issued by the local port authority.

In December alone, shipments reached 246,172 tonnes, down -17.6% compared to the same period in 2018. This volume, however, was 15.4% more than in November 2019.

CSP’s 2019 slab exports were 2,795,935t, down -5.8% on-year compared to 2,969,807t in 2018.

According to the Port of Ceará, the main destination for CSP’s slab shipments during the last year was the US, which took a 54% share in overall exports. South Korea and Turkey were the next largest importers of CSP slab, with a share of 10% and 6%, respectively. The Brazilian domestic market had a share of 14%.

CSP is the fourth-largest steelmaker in Brazil. The company is a joint venture formed by Vale (50% share) and South Korean companies Dongkuk (30%) and Posco (20%).
