Shandong Laiwu Steel has placed a contract with China Metallurgical Group subsidiary MCC 1 to construct its new steelmaking converter and casting facilities, Kallanish notes.
The new project in Jinan city, is to construct a steel workshop and two sulphur removal systems. The steel workshop contains two 120-tonne converters and two 120-t ladle furnaces. The construction period is estimated to be 365 days, with commissioning planned for May 2021. The company anticipates production of around 3.63 million tonnes/year of steel, through the operation of two continuous billet casters.
Meanwhile in May, Laiwu Steel resumed operation of its No. 2 blast furnace following refurbishment begun in November 2019. The 1,880-cubic-metre blast furnace has 1.58m t/y of iron capacity. Laiwu Steel lost about 650,000 tonnes of iron output due to the furnace renovation.
