Hanzhong Steel to commission EAF

Shaanxi province’s Hanzhong Iron & Steel (Hangang) hot trialled a new 75-tonne electric arc furnace on 25 May, and will soon start commercial operation of the facility, Kallanish notes.

Hangang invested CNY 660 million ($92 million) in the short-cycle steelmaking project. Construction of the main 75-t EAF started in August 2018. The system also includes an 80-t VD furnace, a scrap processing system and a continuous caster with nominal capacity for 700,000 t/y of steel billet.

To justify the new capacity, Hangang has dismantled one 40-t converter and one 420-cubic-metre blast furnace, eliminating 700,000 t/y of steel and 500,000 t/y of iron capacities.

Hanzhong Steel has 3.2 million t/y of steel capacity in total. It operates two blast furnaces, (one 1,280m³ and one 2,280m³), two 265-square-metre sintering machines, two pellet shaft furnaces, two 120-t converters and continuous casters. It also has 1.6m t/y of high-speed wire rod capacity and 1.6m t/y of rebar capacity.
