Two new Consteel? plants recently started up by Tenova in South Korea are part of the new 2.5 million tonnes per year capacity Hot Mill complex located in Asan Bay and owned by Dongbu Steel. Each Consteel plant is applied to a new 160-tonne Electric Arc Furnace.
The start-up of the plants, one of which occurred in July and the other in August, has been very successful, according to Tenova. As a result, Dongbu Steel has issued the Provisional Acceptance Certificates for both plants.
Each Consteel plant comprises a charging and a preheating section, with a total length of around 110 m. The charging section consists of two conveyors in which scrap, pig iron, and HBI (hot briquetted iron) are leant in order to continuously feed the EAF. The pre-heater section, consisting of four refractory lined and two water cooled hoods, facilitates scrap preheating by recovery of specific heat contained in the fumes and by combusting the related CO to obtain CO2.
The Consteel system offers Dongbu Steel environmental advantages compared to a traditional top-charged furnace, according to Tenova, such as lower CO2 emissions, reduction of dust to dispose, and lower noise level.
