Total finished steel import in ASEAN-6 is estimated to have declined around 9-10% y-o-y in 2017. Export, on the other hand, is estimated to increase significantly, by 15-16% y-o-y, to nearly 7 million tonnes in the same period.

Major sources of finished steel import were China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. However, import from China declined substantially, by 10 million tonnes to around 20 million tonnes. Import from Japan dipped slightly, by 3% y-o-y while import from South Korea surged by 8% y-o-y during the same period.

Import of section declined significantly, by 15% y-o-y in 2017. Major source of import was China and the volume dropped more than 40% y-o-y to less than a million tonnes in 2017. The second largest source of section import in the region was South Korea, and the volume increased by 14% y-o-y to nearly 300,000 tonnes. Major importers for section in the region were Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Bar import in ASEAN-6 dropped by half in 2017. China still remained the largest source of import for bar in ASEAN-6 (54% of total import). However, the volume declined substantially, by 70% y-o-y, to 2.2 million tonnes in 2017, making share of bar import from China to drop from 88% in 2016 to 54% in 2017. The second largest source of bar import was Japan (15%), followed by the import from Turkey (11%). Major importers for bar in the region were Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Wire rod import in ASEAN-6 dropped by 28% y-o-y in 2017. China remained the largest source of import, with a total volume of above 3 million tonnes, accounting for a share of 67% of total ASEAN-6 import of the product in 2017. The next largest sources of import were Japan (11%) and South Korea (8%). Major importer for wire rod in the region were Thailand (1.3 million tonnes), followed by Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Flat steel import in ASEAN-6 declined slightly, by 2% y-o-y in 2017. Import of hot rolled plate in the region dropped by 15% y-o-y to 3.6 million tonnes in 2017. Major sources of import were China, Japan and South Korea. Import from China shrank significantly, by nearly 30% y-o-y, to below 2 million tonnes in the same period. Among the ASEAN 6 countries, Vietnam’s import of hot rolled plate registered the highest volume of 1.4-1.5 million tonnes, followed by import from Philippines.
Import of hot rolled coil in ASEAN-6 registered 17-18 million tonnes in 2017, a decline of 5% y-o-y. Major sources of import were China (27%), Japan (27%), Taiwan (13%), India (12%) and (Korea 12%). Vietnam was the largest importer of hot rolled coil among the six countries, followed by Thailand.

Cold rolled coil import in the region rose 14% y-o-y to 6.4 million tonnes. Major sources of import were Japan (39%), China (20%) and South Korea (19%). Indonesia is the largest importer of cold rolled coil in the region, followed by Thailand and Malaysia.

Coated sheet import in ASEAN-6 registered 7.6 million tonnes, a decline of 10% y-o-y in 2017. 50% of the import in the region was from China, followed by the import from Japan (21%) and South Korea (12%). Major importers for coated sheet in the region were Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines.

ASEAN-6 countries are not major steel exporters. The bulk of the domestic production is to serve domestic demand. However, export volume had increased significantly, by 16% y-o-y, to touch 10 million tonnes in 2017. Export of long steel from ASEAN-6 remained relatively unchanged, with a slight decline of 2% y-o-y to around 3 million tonnes. The bulk of the export, at almost 7 million tonnes, was for flat steel.

Export of hot rolled plate increased by 37% y-o-y to nearly a million tonnes in 2017. Indonesia’s hot rolled plate export registered the largest volume of nearly half a million tonnes in 2017. Major destinations were India, Thailand and Malaysia.

Export of hot rolled coil doubled in volume to half a million tonnes in the same period. There were two countries in the region that registered a significant export volume of hot rolled coil, namely, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Export of cold rolled coil declined slightly, by 3% y-o-y, to 1.4 million tonnes in 2017. Major exporters in the region were Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. Major destinations for export from Malaysia were Indonesia and India. Major destinations for export from Thailand were USA, South Korea and Italy. However, statistics for Vietnam were not available.

Coated steel sheet export increased by a double digit of 23% y-o-y to 2.4 million tonnes. Vietnam was the largest exporter in the region, at 1.8 million tonnes, an increase of 23% y-o-y in 2017, followed by the export from Malaysia and Thailand. From mirror statistics, major destinations of the export from Vietnam were Indonesia, Malaysia and USA. Major destinations of the export from Malaysia were USA, Thailand and Indonesia and major destinations for Thailand’s coated sheet export were USA, Laos and Myanmar.

Remarks: The analysis is based on statistical data from customs in most of the countries in ASEAN-6, except Vietnam and Philippines, where data is not available. Therefore, the data for the two countries is derived from mirror statistics and estimation.
