China’s finished steel export to ASEAN-6

China’s total finished steel export dropped significantly, from 108.4 million tonnes in 2016 to 75.4 million tonnes in 2017. Export to ASEAN-6 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) dropped 42.5% y-o-y to 20.9 million tonnes in 2017. 
 
Export of bars to ASEAN-6 declined sharply, from 13.3 million tonnes in 2016 to 2.94 million tonnes in 2017. Export to Indonesia dropped from 3.6 million tonnes in 2016 to 734,395 tonnes in 2017. Nevertheless, Indonesia was still the biggest market in ASEAN-6 for bars from China in 2017, followed by Singapore, at 733,098 tonnes, which was a decline from 1.8 million tonnes in 2016. 
 
China’s export of bars to Philippines dropped from 3 million tonnes in 2016 to 634,914 tonnes in 2017. Export to Thailand contracted by 85.7% y-o-y to 377,795 tonnes in 2017. Export to Malaysia registered 234,748 tonnes in 2017, a decline from 1.3 million tonnes in 2016. Export to Vietnam remained the lowest level among the six countries, at 222.828 tonnes in 2017, which was a decline from 882,803 tonnes in 2016. 
 
China’s export of wire rod to ASEAN-6 dropped by a million tonnes to nearly 3 million tonnes in 2017. Export to Indonesia declined 18% y-o-y to 555,296 tonnes in 2017. Export to Malaysia registered around half a million tonnes in 2016 but the volume contracted to 189,177 tonnes in 2017. Export to Philippines and Thailand also declined, but the volumes were still significant, at 700,490 tonnes and 772,424 tonnes, respectively, followed by the export to Vietnam, at 629,494 tonnes in 2017. 
 
Export of section from China to ASEAN-6 dropped from 1.74 million tonnes in 2016 to 928,994 tonnes in 2017. Major destinations for China’s section export within ASEAN-6 were Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. Export to Philippines and Malaysia declined moderately, by 50,000 tonnes each to 261,240 tonnes and 252,718 tonnes in 2017, respectively. Export to Vietnam dropped by more than half to 223,708 tonnes in the same period. Export to Indonesia and Singapore were less than 100,000 tonnes each while export to Thailand dropped from 92,589 tonnes in 2016 to 10,617 tonnes in 2017.  
 
China’s export of flat steel products to ASEAN-6, with the exception of cold rolled coil, also decreased in 2017, but the drop was less significant, when compared to the decline in long steel export. Export of plates to ASEAN-6 dropped by 28% y-o-y to 1.8 million tonnes. Vietnam was the largest destination of China’s plate export to ASEAN-6. The volume declined from 1.6 million tonnes in 2016 to a million tonnes in 2017. 
 
China’s plates export to Thailand registered 180,600 tonnes in 2017, a decline from 256,827 tonnes in 2016. Export to Singapore dropped by 50,000 tonnes to 100,604 tonnes in 2017. Export to Indonesia registered the lowest volume compared to the other five countries in the region. The volume was 63,141 tonnes in 2017, a decline of 30% y-o-y. 
 
China’s export of plates to Philippines and Malaysia, on the other hand, continued to increase. The export to Philippines increased slightly, by 4% y-o-y to 314,158 tonnes while export to Malaysia surged significantly, by 37% y-o-y, to 141,569 tonnes in 2017. 
 
China’s export of hot rolled coil to ASEAN-6 dropped 13.8% y-o-y to 4.7 million tonnes in 2017. Vietnam emerged as the largest destination for China’s hot rolled coil export to the world in 2015, overtaking South Korea. Export volume to Vietnam dropped by 20.6% y-o-y to 3.5 million tonnes in 2017, but Vietnam still remained the biggest market for China’s hot rolled coil export. 
 
Export to Malaysia and Thailand declined 25% y-o-y and 10% y-o-y to 193,162 tonnes and 254,467 tonnes in 2017, respectively. On the other hand, export to Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore increased significantly in 2017. Export to Indonesia rose 43% y-o-y to 486,753 tonnes and export to Philippines surged 40.6% y-o-y to 291,725 tonnes in the same period. Export to Singapore was not significant, at 14,350 tonnes in 2017. 
 
China’s export of cold rolled coil to ASEAN-6 countries in total increased 13.2% y-o-y to 1.25 million tonnes in 2017. Vietnam was the largest destination among the ASEAN-6 countries, at 507,781 tonnes, an increase of 17.6% y-o-y in 2017. Philippines was the second largest destination of China’s CRC export to ASEAN-6 countries. However, the volume declined 13% y-o-y to 305,501 tonnes in 2017. 
 
Export of cold rolled coil from China to the rest of the countries in ASEAN-6 all registered double-digit increases. Export to Indonesia doubled in volume to 163,560 tonnes in 2017. Export to Malaysia increased 13.7% y-o-y to 166,560 tonnes and export to Thailand increased 15.8% y-o-y to 69,560 tonnes in the same period. Export to Singapore registered 40,025 tonnes, an increase of 37% y-o-y in 2017. 
 

China’s export of coated steel sheet to ASEAN-6 countries declined 13.7% y-o-y to 4.2 million tonnes in 2017. Vietnam and Thailand were the two largest export destinations among ASEAN-6, with volumes at above a million tonnes each in 2017. Export to Vietnam, at 1.25 million tonnes, was a decline of 33% y-o-y in 2017. Export to Thailand, however, remained unchanged at 1.15 million tonnes in 2017. Export to Philippines dropped from 1.02 million tonnes in 2016 to 994,802 tonnes in 2017. Export to Indonesia rose 9.3% y-o-y to 461,420 tonnes in the same period. Export to Malaysia also surged, by 8% y-o-y, to 216,338 tonnes in 2017. Export to Singapore declined 17% y-o-y to 165,133 tonnes in the same period.
