China’s export of prefabricated buildings

According to the China’s customs, total China’s export volume of prefabricated buildings (HS code: 9406) registered 822,357 tonnes in 2016, an increase of 13% y-o-y. The volume was half a million tonnes in 2007 and continued to increase at an average growth rate of 5% till 2016. The export volume in the first ten months of 2017, however, stagnated at 674,395 tonnes when compared to the same period of 2016. 
 
Major destinations of the China’s export of prefabricated buildings were the ASEAN-6 countries, which totaled 214,114 tonnes in 2016, an increase of 44% y-o-y. However, the volume dropped significantly, by 33% y-o-y, to 119,178 tonnes in the first ten months of 2017. Export to non-ASEAN countries, on the other hand, increased by a double digit of 12% y-o-y to 555,217 tonnes in the same period of 2017. 
 
Among the ASEAN-6 countries, Indonesia was the largest destination of China’s export of prefabricated buildings, at 114,890 tonnes in 2016, which was an increase of 62% y-o-y. However, the volume dropped by half to 44,803 tonnes from January to October 2017. Philippines was the second largest destination of the export, at 63,170 tonnes in 2016, an increase of 19% y-o-y. The export volume declined significantly, by 34% y-o-y to 35,927 tonnes in the first ten months of 2017. 
 
Export to Singapore increased by more than three folds to 13,950 tonnes in 2016.  The export continued to surge, by 28% y-o-y to 15,014 tonnes, in the first ten months of 2017. 
 
Meanwhile, export to Thailand doubled in volume to around 12,000 tonnes in 2013 and remained unchanged at the same level until 2015 before registering a slight decline in 2016. The export in the first ten months of 2017, however, registered an increase of 9% y-o-y to 10,770 tonnes. 
 
Export to Malaysia registered 7,212 tonnes in 2016, an increase of 15% y-o-y and the volume doubled y-o-y to 10,123 tonnes in the first ten months of 2017. 
 
Export to Vietnam, however, was not significant, at 3,503 tonnes in 2016. The export volume declined by 11% y-o-y to 2,541 tonnes from January to October 2017. 
 

Among the non-ASEAN countries, USA, UK, Russia and France were the largest export destinations for China’s prefabricated buildings, with volume at 41,459 tonnes, 27,586 tonnes, 26,463 tonnes and 24,320 tonnes respectively in the first ten months of 2017.
